Inmate Housing Payment Process

Idaho Code 20.607 requires the Sheriff to seek reimbursement for incarceration costs from persons sentenced to jail. The cost is $25.00 per day, up to $500.00 (20 days) per incarceration. These days are calculated on pre-trial and sentenced days for Ada County prisoners, not inmates held for the State or other counties.

When an Ada County inmate is prepared for release, he/she is issued a payment due notice listing number of days served in our facility and a total balance due. The inmate signs the form stating that he/she received this notice. If the inmate wants to dispute the balance due, he/she must do so in writing within thirty (30) days of his/her release. The Sheriff's Office will then research records, verify the amount of the debt and mail a copy of the verification.

The payment due notice also serves as notice to the inmate that the Ada County Sheriff's Office has a contract with a collection agency. If the inmate fails to pay the amount owed or to set up payment arrangements within sixty (60) days, the account will be turned over to the agency for purposes of collection. Payment arrangements can no longer be made once the account has been turned over to collections. The collection agency will charge an additional fee and interest.
